Your first yoga class

Namasté dear Yogini, dear Yogi!

Here are some tips for your first yoga class with YogaPetra:

Which course is suitable for me?

Beginner course:  For beginners (without previous knowledge) or if you have a physical limitation (e.g. back pain), or if you have no yoga experience, this is the right place for you.

At a relaxed pace, you will learn how to perform the most important asanas and how to connect your breath with movement – and thus gently approach the world of yoga.

advanced course: For everyone who practices or has practiced yoga regularly and is familiar with the basics.

This class is great for you if you have already had a few yoga classes and practice yoga regularly.

The same applies here: don't be afraid - we are all here to learn and not to be able to do things perfectly right from the start.

Yoga for Everyone

Beginners and advanced practitioners alike benefit from this mixed group. Alternatives to the asanas are always offered during the class, challenging or easier versions, so everyone can take part.

Your yoga outfit should be comfortable!

You are welcome to bring your own yoga mat or borrow one from me.

I recommend comfortable jogging pants or leggings that allow freedom of movement; a T-shirt or tank top are ideal and are completely sufficient. For the final relaxation, you can bring something warm to put on (eg socks, scarf, blanket, sweater). We practice barefoot, so shoes are not necessary.

Plan enough time for your first yoga class!

To start your first yoga class in a relaxed manner, it is a good idea to allow enough time. It is best to arrive 10 minutes before the class starts, so that we can discuss any questions you may have before the class.

We also want to avoid disturbing the initial relaxation of others if someone arrives late.

Listen to your body and forget the pressure to perform!

It is important that you listen to your own body and feel comfortable in the yoga poses. If something hurts, your breath cannot flow freely, is shallow or strained, or you cannot breathe at all because of the effort, then this is a sign that you have gone too far. Please do not force anything, yoga is not a competitive sport.

Don't compare yourself to other participants in the class, every body is different and maybe the person sitting next to you on the mat has been practicing a little longer than you. Don't forget that you are on your own personal journey.

There are variations and easier versions of each asana.

If you need a break and it becomes too strenuous, you can always come into a resting position, such as child's pose, for a few breaths. This is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign that you have a good understanding of your body and your strength.

Free yourself from your doubts and remain open!

I'm looking forward to our yoga classes together.

Namasté

Petra
